Abstract

This descriptive has been done to identify psychiatric outpatients' knowledge of illness and medication.
Data were obtained from 82 subjects who had received symptom and medication instruction during hospitalization.
The research period was from Feb.2 to Feb.28, 2001.
The data was analysed by descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA and the results of analysis were as follows:
1. Knowledge of psychiatric illness, the mean score of causes of mental disorder was 2.56(full marks 5), Coping method of mental disorder 2.52(3), The reason to know symptom 2.77(3), management of symptom 4.93(6), causes of relapse 3.76(5), methods of relapse warning symptom 2.74(4).
2. Knowledge of medication, the mean score of reason for medication compliance was 3.17 (full marks 4), neuroleptics 5.77(7), characteristics of neuroleptics 5.18(7), management of medication compliance 5.26(6), drug side effects 3.09(4), management of drug side effects 3.02(4), neuroleptics and other drugs 3.43(5).
3. The relative factor influencing knowledge of illness was education frequency(F=2.714, P=0.042) and the relative factors influencing knowledge of medication were education (F= 4.955, P=0.009) and education frequency (F=2.681, P=0.045).
This study suggests that well-designed educational program which reflects Korean character and sociocultural background for the mental disorder is required.
